Join Ivy Ridge Green for a day of service Monday, January 16, 9:30am – 1:30pm

We plan to do vine cutting and invasive plant and debris removal. Meet at Fountain Street and Umbria, from there we will split into groups and work at the Ivy Ridge Trail, the Manayunk Canal Towpath, Germany Hilland the Roxborough Reservoir.

Tree Tenders Fall Planting

Its time for the Tree Tenders Fall Planting!! Marlene Schleifer will be leading the plantings in the Ivy Ridge Green area. Please meet at 9AM Nov. 19th at the Doblson School. There will be a quick demonstration for proper planting techniques before we get into groups to plant at various locations. Hope to see you Saturday!

Pennsylvania Horticultural Society judges (pictured) visited the steps in July – two months latter The Fountain Street Steps won First Place in The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Small Community Flower Garden Category of their 2011 City Garden Contest.

We should be very proud of ourselves; it took a lot of hard work from all of us to get this award. Each one of you played a huge part in achieving this award.

Public Meeting June 9th on Manayunk Bridge Trail Design

Thursday, June 9 at 7pm, the public is invited to meet with consultants to share their thoughts on the design of the proposed Manayunk Bridge trail. The design team, led by Whitman, Requardt and Associates, will host the meeting which will be held at the North Light Community Center, 175 Green Lane. As the design process moves forward, the team seeks to actively engage the public in shaping the look and feel of the trail. “We will meet with community groups and the public this spring and summer to get their ideas, share alternatives, and collaboratively develop the design,” said Jeff Riegner, leader of the WR&A Design Team. The meeting on June 9 is the first publicmeeting held by the group for this purpose.

On Saturday, June 4th, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and the members of the Complete the Trail Coalition are hosting a guided trail walk the day before Sunday’s Philadelphia International Cycling Championship.

As a supporter of completing the Schuylkill River Trail, we invite you to please join others in this family friendly walk to see how trails that are under construction or in design will connect Lower Merion and Manayunk. Register Today!

When: Saturday, June 4th; 1pm-4pm (walk departs between 1:15-1:30pm)
Where: Meet us at Lock and Main Streets in Manayunk to sign in. We will walk as a group following this course.

Walk up Main Street and over the Green Lane Bridge
Pick up the Cynwyd Trail at Belmont Avenue/Rock Hill Road
Follow the under-construction Cynwyd Trail up the Spaventa Spur
View the Manayunk Bridge at the Overlook
Walk down to the Schuylkill River (under I-76) through the Connelly Spur
Cross the Pencoyd Bridge
Walk back to down Main Street to Lock Street in Manayunk

Tree Tender’s big tree planting – Saturday April 16th

The RMW (Roxborough/Manayunk/Wissahickon) Tree Tenders will be planting approximately 65 new street and yard trees on Saturday, April 16th , and we could use some volunteer assistance. No prior tree planting experience is necessary. If you can help us out for a couple of hours, please let me know right away.

On Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 9:00am, join Hal Rosner, board-certified Master Arborist, and the Roxborough Manayunk Wissahickon Tree Tenders new pruning club to learn the basics of tree pruning and tree pit maintenance. The class is free and open to the public, taking place at Gorgas Park at the park house.

BREAKING: Ivy Ridge Trail wins planning funds

Big news! Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) just announced $50,000 to support feasiblity and planning for Ivy Ridge Trail and the connector to Montgomery County, the Manayunk Bridge. This funding will be matched by William Penn and managed by Kay Sykora and the Schuylkill Project.

Congratulations to all of you who have worked on this project since it was just a good idea looking for some strong backs, two years ago. With your help, we are half way there. We’ll be in touch to ask for your ideas, support, and participation in the planning process over the next several months.

Meanwhile, take a moment to send thanks to Kay at the Schuylkill Project for winning the state’s support: friend them on Facebook.

Fountain Street Steps gets a Rain Barrel

To help with storm water runoff, PWD donated a rain barrel to the Fountain Street Steps. Once a platform was made to level out the area, installation was a breeze. Many thanks to PWD!
