Penn Weekend Service strikes again

Cover

Nicole Dillard and a dozen students from the University of Pennsylvania were kind enough to spend a gorgeous Saturday knocking Germany Hill into shape for the 2010 season.

Thanks for all the hard work, guys!

Since 2009, the Friends of Germany Hill have beat back the trash, overgrowth and ivy covering the Smick and Fountain Street slopes. Neighbors are working with Fairmount Park to develop a plan for the space, which includes several acres of land overlooking the Hillside Recreation Center and backing up to Parker Street. The old folks remember it as the 70’s party spot. (Ask them about the beer bunkers.) More recently, Yunkers who have seen nearly every other square foot of open space developed for housing are looking to Germany Hill as a sort of refuge: a place for trails, orchards and a view of the Schuylkill Valley.
